The kulilats of chess

Previously I penned an article about the little giants of chess-Armenia and Iceland. In Armenia they have 33 grandmasters, 22 International masters and 29 Fide masters in a population of three million. Iceland has 13 Grandmasters, 13 International Masters, and 25 FIDE masters in a country of only 300,000 inhabitants! At the opposite end of the list are a number of countries whose chess-playing abilities are, to say the least,ridiculous. Leading the kulilats are Taiwan and Pakistan. In Taiwan or Chinese Taipei the sport was relatively little known before 2004 and the average rating for their top 10 players is 1663 with only one titled player. This means that if our kiddie players Allan Pason,Kyle Sevillano and even our kiddie journalist KC Morala or 9 year old Jeremy Pepito were to compete there ,they have a good chance of winning. Taiwan ,by the way has a population of 26 million. Its even worse in Pakistan. They have no titled player even with a population of 177 million. It is really a paradox as Pakistan was formerly a part of India where chess was born and considered a chess giant as the current champion is Anand. Bangladesh or formerly East Pakistan also has 5 grandmasters and 26 titled players. Another astonishing fact is Japan. Athough,they have the 3rd biggest economy in the world and a population of 127 million, they are another Kulilat. Japan is ranked number 93rd by Fide and has no grandmaster. Its top 10 players have an average of 2200 which means the Cebu Selection alone will clobber Japan, Other kulilats are South Korea (pop.-49 million) and Thailand (pop.-66 million). South Korea`s top 10 players have an average rating of 2075 and Thailand 2194. There are also more than 20 countries who are chess “poor".It could be due to: 1) Competition from a similar game with cultural roots in the country (e.g. Shogi in Japan, Xiangqi in Taiwan and Korea) 2) Small overall population, or geographic isolation of a country (Bahamas,Brunei, San Marino) 3) Illiteracy Asian Continental This is an important tournament in the calendar as it is a part of the World Cup and the World Championship Cycle. The big news is that Oliver Barbosa qualified while Wesley So did not due to tiebreaks ,although he won the Blitz side event. World Championship starts today

The World Chess Championship 2012 will be a match between the current World Champion Viswanathan Anand of India and Boris Gelfand of Israel, winner of the Candidates tournament. The match will be held in Moscow up to May 30 under the auspices of FIDE, the World Chess Federation. The prize fund is US $2.55 million, the winner getting $1.53 million (60%), the loser $1,02 million (40%). The two will play a match of 12 games, unless someone scores a decisive 6.5 points at an earlier stage. In case of a tie, there will be a rapid / blitz playoff. Anand played his first World Championship match in 1995 for the PCA, and lost to Garry Kasparov. Between 2000 and 2002 Anand held the FIDE World Champion title and later became the undisputed World Champion in 2007 by winning the World Championship tournament in Mexico City. He then defended his title against Vladimir Kramnik in 2008 in Bonn, Germany and also in 2010 against Veselin Topalov in Sofia, Bulgaria. Anand won numerous tournaments in his career, including Wijk aan Zee (1988, 1998, 2003, 2004, 2005 joint with Veselin Topalov), Reggio Emilia (1992), Alekhine Memorial (Moscow, 1992), the PCA Interzonal (Groningen, 1993), Biel (1997) and Linares (1998, 2007, 2008). In 2009 Gelfand won the World Cup in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia and thus qualified for the Candidates matches held in May 2011 in Kazan, Russia. Seeded fourth, the Israeli beat Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (Azerbaijan) in the quarterfinals, Gata Kamsky (USA) in the semis and Alexander Grischuk (Russia) in the final, qualifying for the 2012 World Championship match against Anand. Gelfand has won numerous tournaments in his career, including Wijk aan Zee (1992), Biel (1993), Dos Hermanas (1994), Belgrade (1995), Tilburg (1996), Malmö (1999), and Pamplona (2004 Statistics Between 1984 and 2012, Anand played 1496 games: +440-265=791 in tournaments with classical time control. Playing white he scored 68%, and playing black, 56%. Between 1991 and 2012 he played 1224 games in rapid chess and blitz: +527-151=564. Between 1983 and 2012 Gelfand played 1591 games in classical time control tournaments: +463-212=916. Playing white he scored 63%, and playing black, 52%. Between 1991 and 2012 he played 878 games in rapid chess and blitz: +300-209=369. Classical chess- The two men played 35 games with classical time control. The first game ended in a draw, after which Gelfand dominated, winning 4 games in a row playing white. In 1993 Boris scored his 5th and last victory, and he has not since defeated Vishy. In the 1997 FIDE Knockout Championship, the Indian drew head-to-head; nine years later he gained the lead by 6:5 in Wijk aan Zee in 2006. Rapid chess- Anand confirms his status as rapid chess king: he never lost a game against Gelfand until they traded victories in Monaco in 2008. Vishy and Boris played only one tie break in the 2000 World Cup, the Indian only gaining an edge in “Armageddon”. The lion’s share of the games was played in Monaco in the Amber tournaments. Inmates tournament- Cepca will be sponsoring a tournament among inmates of the Mandaue City jail next Friday May 18 starting at 1pm. Depending on the number of participants, format will be 5-7 rounds Swiss with a time control of 10 minutes and an increment of 5 secs. This is a project of Mandaue City jail warden, Supt. Jessie Calumpang and Cepca so the prisoners can “ learn from a game that rewards patience and problem-solving and apply it to their own lives.” After the tournament, Cepca members Jojo Muralla, Dante Arguelles, Jun Olis and Mike Banebane will play a simul among the prisoners . Winners of the tournament and simul will receive cash prizes.

Vietnamese wins Cebu leg of Poker Tour

The 2012 Asia Pacific Poker Tour Cebu Main Event has just concluded , with Hoang Anh Do crowned as the champion. He pockets P 5,927,000 and all the bragging rights that go with it. 245 players from 45 countries participated in this big event with all kinds of poker action from April 24-30 lured by all the publicity online acclaiming Cebu as a tourist paradise not only in Asia but all over the world.. The APPT Cebu tournament has been a favourite among players. More like a tropical holiday with hardcore poker action thrown in, the tournament was won last time by the first female to ever take down an APPT title. Im Young Shin – now known as Team PokerStars Pro Vivian Im – conquered the P100,000 buy-in Main Event in 2010 over a 236-player field to win P5.81 million in prize money Hoang Anh Do is the first APPT Champion to come from Vietnam . He is a 27 year old banker who came to Cebu to holiday on the beaches but thought he would also like to give the APPT a try, having only taken up poker six months ago. Events to watch this year

The World Chess Championship 2012 will be a match between the current world champion Viswanathan Anand of India and Boris Gelfand of Israel. It will take place on May 10–31 in the Engineering Building of the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, Russia .The prize fund is 2.55 million US Dollars. Anand last defended his title by winning the World Chess Championship 2010 against Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria. The challenger won the eight-player Candidate Matches comprising Topalov, Gata Kamsky, Shakriyar Mamedyarov,Alexander Grischuk, Levon Aronian, Vladimir Kramnik and Teimour Radjabov, Anand is 42 years old rated 2799 while Gelfand is a year older at 43 and rated 2727. The 47th Capablanca Memorial will be held from May 3-15 at the Riviera hotel in Havana, Cuba. The Elite Group will once again be a six-player double round robin. To date confirmed players are GM Vassily Ivanchuk (2766) of Ukraine, 5-times winner of Capablanca Memorial, and the Cuban GM Leinier Domínguez (2730), three-times winner, and Lázaro Bruzón (2691). The 7th Mikhail Tal Memorial will take place from 7th to 19th June, 2012, in Moscow, Russia. Magnus Carlsen, Vladimir Kramnik, Levon Aronian, Radjabov Teimour, Hikaru Nakamura and Fabiano Caruana have confirmed the participation. Other players are Alexander Morozevich, Alexander Grischuk, Evgeny Tomashevsky and Luke Mchane. The Kings Chess Tournament will follow in Medias, Romania, from June 23 to July 4. It will include Viswanathan Anand, who would have just finished his World Chess Championship match with Gelfand. The world number one rated player Magnus Carlsen and the main contender to enter the 2800 club Teimour Radjabov will also participate despite their tight calendar, coming from the Tal Memorial 2012. Sergey Karjakin and Vassily Ivanchuk are also confirmed participants, while the organization will announce one Romanian player in the coming days. Another major event in the Fide calendar is the 40th Chess Olympiad in Istanbul ,Turkey scheduled on August 27 to September 10. It is a biennial tournament in which teams from all over the world compete against each other. The Philippines has been participating since the 50s and an elimination series of tournaments is currently on-going to determine our representatives in both the Men and Women events. The Bilbao Grand Slam Final Masters, considered one of the world’s most prestigious, will take place from September 24 to October 13, 2012 and, as in previous editions, the world’s top-ranked players will participate. Two players have already qualified—Norway’s Magnus Carlsen and Russian Vladimir Kramnik (the former being number 1 in the world ranking and winner of the last edition of the Grand Slam Final and the latter, former world champion and winner of the 2010 Final) The rest of the participants of this great chess event in the Biscayan capital, also receiving direct invitations are Aronian ,the winner of the 2012 Tata tournament in Wijk aan Zee, Holland, and the winner of the 2012 Kings tournament in Bazna, Romania . The 4th London Chess Classic will take place on December 1-10 . Players are Levon Aronian ,Luke McShane Magnus Carlsen ,David Howell, Michael Adams ,Viswanathan Anand. And Nigel Short. Other events to watch in the Asian region are Asian Continental Championship in Vietnam on May 4-14 and Asean Age Group also in Vietnam on June 10-19 . Cepca to promote chess among prisoners

The Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association as part of its purpose to promote the game will reach out to our brothers in prison so they can “ learn from a game that rewards patience and problem-solving and apply it to their own lives.” We will start in Mandaue City Jail as the warden,Jessie Calumpang,is very receptive to the idea and related to one of our officers,Jun Olis. I got the idea from Cook County Jail Sheriff Tom Dart of Illinois who said "It helps you gain mental clarity and keeps you focused." We believe that chess will teach the inmates "responsibility, planning ahead, patience, problem solving, and learning from past mistakes to name a few." "We see it day-in and day-out that people want instant gratification and that often individuals do not think before they act," Dart said . "Thoughtless actions will hurt you while playing chess and hurt you more on the street." "It makes your mind expand," said inmate Kevin Upshaw. "It is like life. I am incarcerated. I am trying to unlock my mind. Chess is going to help me." "I love that it teaches you the art of thinking that I can apply to everyday life," said inmate Jack Moody. "It gives them something to do. The benefits are amazing," said Sheriff Dart. "This is a unique thing, and they are paying for it themselves, not the taxpayers...Some are tournament ready to challenge other inmates in jails, and they are paying for this themselves." After Mandaue, Cepca will go to other jails in Cebu like BBRC and Operation Second Chance. Our program,which is scheduled next month is to hold simul tournaments to be conducted by Cepca members and inmate winners will be rewarded with some cash including draws. Cepca president Jojo Muralla,club secretary Dante Arguelles ,Membership chairman Jun Olis and Mike Banebane will conduct the simul against 10 opponents each. Mandaue City Jail has around 855 inmates. “We will also conduct a tournament among inmates with cash prizes and trophy going to the winners and donate chess sets to the jail” said Jojo. Alphecca Gonzales reigns among the participants of Girls 8-under Though Jazzelle Villarin takes off with an impressive performance of straight wins in the early rounds, Ruth de Guzman from Makati City trips her off the race for the champion trophy on the fourth place. A draw with second placer Michelle Yaon and another loss on her last round with Jean Karen Enriquez lands her on the sixth place for the Girls 16-under division. Meanwhile, her colleague KC Morala finishes ninth. Jessa Balbona barely managed to hang on in the Top 10 in the Girls 20-under category, finishing the six rounds with two wins and two draws. Jeremy Pepito takes the limelight for the second place in the Open 10-under category. . A loss to Paulo Bersamina, later the title holder for the Open 14-under, and a draw with Lanz Otero lays Rhenzi Kyle Sevillano in the third place. Half a point behind him, fellow Cebuano John Francis Balbona gets hold of fourth rank. Half a point behind, Allan Pason takes his throne on the second place. Meanwhile, Felix Shaun Balbona and Diego Abraham Claro gets fifth and seventh place respectively. Aldritz Pondoyo settles for third, with James Andrew Balbona closely following, placing right next to Pondoyo. Duane Borgonia seizes sixth place. Michael Silvaderio gets a hold in the 9th place for the Open 20-under.”

Poker! Do you know that there are an estimated 300 million poker players world wide and that number keeps growing every year? She will be back this year.
It will be the first time that the tournament will be hosted at the Waterfront Airport Hotel and Casino. Previously,it was held on the luxurious Shangri-La Mactan Resort where Poker Stars qualifiers will be staying.

Enrique del Prado Jr Jun was my classmate in Colegio del Santo Nino during our elementary days (a long time ago indeed!) and we had a business venture in the early 80s so we were that close.
We also played a lot of poker not only in Cebu but also in Manila. He is a very good poker player. So I was not surprised when I heard the big news last year.
Jun won the 2011 Asian Poker Tour (APT) Philippines Main Event for $179,260. He topped a field of 231 players to claim the title and some serious bragging rights.
The US$2,500 buy-in event took place at the Resorts World Manila in Pasay City last year and by the time the tournament played down to its final table, six of the ten remaining players were from the Philippines
When the final table began, Jun was in 4th in chips but he managed to turn things around early nearly doubling his stack with a 250k pot.
He then went on to eliminate two players and by the time he entered heads up against runner-up Elton Tsang he held a nearly 3:1 chip advantage. Tsang put up a fierce fight but in the end he fell to a measly high card Jack.
$1,000,000 On July 1, 2012, the World Series of Poker will host The Big One for One Drop at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino. The $1 million ! buy-in event will be the largest poker tournament ever held, with a projected eight-figure first prize
22 players have already registered.
It seems that in poker the sky is the limit and it`s adherents dwarfs all sports.

On cleavage and mini-skirts

Women who wear low-cut blouses to compete in chess tournaments are being put in check.
New rules dictate that women cannot reveal “decolletes” [the French word for cleavage] during the just concluded European Women`s Championship in Turkey.
The European Chess Union (ECU) has revealed that several spectators have complained about the choice of clothing by some female players, while male competitors have stated that they have been distracted during games . Some female competitors are just too damn sexy.
Are beautiful players using their partially-covered parts to gain advantage at chess tournaments? I think so,
Sava Stoisavljevic, the female ECU General Secretary, didn’t seem to mind that the female players dressed in skimpy garments but the change in dress code was due to female players’ appearance causing a ruckus in the peanut gallery.
“I heard many comments from spectators and coaches,” Stoisavljevic said “It's nice to see chess players with short skirts — they are very pretty girls. But I believe there should still be some limit.There is dress code in many different sports, and we decided to establish our rules as well.”
According to the rules “Players can keep two buttons on their tops open, but no more. Skirts must be no shorter than 10 centimeters (3.9 inches) above the knee.
The rules, which apply to both men and women, demand that players wear clean clothing that does not show excessive wear or holes.
Players must not have body odor.
Sunglasses may be worn during play; hats, with the exception of religious head garb, may not. Flip-flops are banned.”
Players who are in violation of the new rules will receive several verbal and written warnings before being forced to leave the competition if they still refuse to comply

“Young champions, from the 1st Cebu City Age Group Chess Challenge held in the Cebu City Sports Center Dance Studio last March 24-25, 2012, will lead Team Cebu to the upcoming Visayas Leg Age-Group & National Juniors Chess Championships to be held in Kalibo, Akhlan on April 7-14.

James Fernando Diloy, emerged as champion in Boys 12-under category. For the girls, Cherry Mae Caballes was affirmed champion.

The Boys 14-under Division ended up to be a fourfold tie amongst Rhenzi Kyle Sevillano, Jeffu Dorog, Ryan Pacres and Christian Pondoyo. Sevillano won in the tiebreak. Meanwhile, Laila Camel Nadera, with a record of 5 wins and no loss, took the throne for the girls category.

KC Morala earned the champion title for the Girls 16-under Category while it was Allan Pason who took the limelight for the boys in the same age class.

Other champs were Vladimir James Robillos and Regina Catherine Quiñanola for 8-under Category, Jeremy Pepito and Glesit Marie Tatoy for 10-under Category, and Romero Junrey and Carmel Socorro Loquez for 20-under Category.

CCSC and Cebu City Government will finance their transportation and meal expenses only.”

Cepca The club sponsored a tournament among its members last weekend to celebrate the birthday of its valued member ,Jun Olis, at his residence in Gunob,Lapulapu also participated by members of the Lapulapu Chess Club.

The surprise winner was Dr. Ramon Pangilinan followed by Ramil Resuera, Lando Torres,Jerome Mongcopa, Arnel Abellana and Aldwin Daculan.

Meanwhile a cepca member, who requested to remain unidentified has won a bonanza of $20,000, He has promised to sponsor a big tournament and dinner in a 5-star hotel for board members as soon as his check will arrive. lucky fellow!
